Transformer Installation & Removal / Jacking, Skidding & Rigging

When it comes to installing or removing transformers, we provide an economical, flexible, tailored solution for everyone, and constantly invest in the latest technology and equipment to minimise cost and risk.

We have specialised in transformer installation and removals, jacking, skidding and rigging for more than 45 years and guarantee a professional service for all our customers.

The equipment we use to install and remove heavy plant machinery, like transformers, is fully tested and certified and can be adapted to suit even the most challenging projects.

Where space is limited, jacking, skidding, and rigging are more practical alternatives to hiring a crane. One of the reasons why we use jacking, skidding and rigging systems to manoeuvre heavy transformers in power plants is to reduce the need for multiple workers to operate different machines in sync. It also enables us to relocate machinery in tight spaces without causing damage.

If needed, we can supply forklift trucks, appropriate attachments and experienced operators, as part of our transformer installation and removal service – ensuring you have everything you need to handle loads.

We recently successfully completed a high-profile move of a 166,000kg generator transformer from a nuclear power station. To complete the project, we used our hydraulic skid system to move the transformer from inside the building to the roadway outside, ready to be loaded to a girder trailer. The transformer was then transported, in the evening, down the west coast of Scotland under full police escort.

Jacking and skidding is a technique employed when space limitations prohibit the use of a crane.

Climbing jacks are hydraulic and allow you to raise and lower heavy loads in a controlled manner.

Cylinder jacks lift loads to a position where climbing jacks can be placed underneath and transport the goods further. Once the climbing jack has been moved out of the way, they can also lower the load to ground level.

Strand jacks feature a hydraulic cylinder. This moves a cable through the jack, allowing the attached load to be lifted or lowered.

Skidding systems are also hydraulically controlled and enable precise positioning across a variety of industrial projects. They are made up of two main components – skid shoes and skid beams. Both the load and skid shoes travel along the skid beams using a self-locking hydraulic propulsion system.

If you’d like to know more about our systems, or you need a professional partner for jacking and skidding, contact the JB Rawcliffe team today.
