Air cargo handling is the best option for clients who want to send a shipment door-to-door, over a medium to long distance – fast. Whilst JB Rawcliffe & Sons will take care of every aspect for you, it’s still good to know how the air cargo handling process works.

After choosing a freight forwarding company and agreeing on a price for air freight handling, the next step is for them to collect the goods from your supplier. These can either be pre-packed, ready for travel (also known as RFT), or the forwarder will package them up for you.

Your cargo is then taken to the airport and will go through customs before being put on the aircraft. On arrival in the UK, goods will need to pass customs again and will only be released once the duty and taxes have been paid.

Then, as agreed with your freight forwarding company, your cargo will be delivered to its end destination.

Air freight and sea freight handling are both viable options for shipping goods overseas. The best option for you will depend on the:

  • accessibility
  • cargo safety
  • cost
  • distance your cargo needs to travel
  • time sensitivity
  • type of cargo

Whilst sea freight and boat port cargo handling is preferred for shipments that need to travel long distances, air freight is ideal for city-to-city transport. In fact, air cargo services have become the go-to mode of transport for retailers looking to dispatch their goods efficiently.

In comparison with sea freight, air freight is typically the more expensive option. This is mostly due to the limited capacity on a plane, the higher fuel consumption, and operational costs of aircraft. Despite this, air freight remains the fastest mode of transport between two points.

The containers used for boat port cargo handling offer a safe way of transporting goods, but there can be catastrophic damages if goods aren’t packed correctly. For example, ships could catch fire or sink. With minimal handling required for air freight, the risk of cargo getting damaged in transit is significantly less – meaning it’s more likely to reach its destination safely and in one piece.
